Developmental Education

SLCC is Utah’s “Equal Opportunity College.” As a comprehensive community college, SLCC serves students at all levels of preparedness. For some we are the first step - and for many others we’re the only doorway – to the personal and financial rewards of a higher education. Fact is, the majority of developmental education students have been out of high school at least four years. Developmental assistance is critical to helping these students get back into the educational process.

After taking developmental courses, previously under-prepared students (as measured by standardized placement exams) perform at virtually the same level in more advanced classes – and graduate in even greater numbers – than their better-prepared counterparts. For many, the path that starts in Developmental Education continues with general education then into career training or transfer to a four-year institution and beyond.

Developmental Education Student Profile

  • 60% have been out of high school for at least four years
  • The majority are non-traditional students
  • Many have disabilities or face other barriers
