Holmstead Explodes for 40 points in Win over CSI
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (November 19, 2009) – Freshman Haley Holmstead breaks the single game scoring record with 40 points in a 18 point win over College of Southern Idaho.  The third ranked Bruins took a 16 point lead in to the locker room at halftime.  Southern Idaho was unable to overcome poor shooting (38%) in the first half while Salt Lake was red hot hitting 81% of their shots.  No. 3 Salt Lake is now 6-1 overall and 1-0 in SWAC play. 

The unstoppable Holmstead shot 12 of 19 from the floor and missed only one of 16 free throws.  Allie Blake was the next leading scorer with 10 points followed by Dayna Burgess with six points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals.  Salt Lake’s defense held Southern Idaho to 35% shooting from the floor and 20% from behind the arc. 

No. 3 Salt Lake (6-1) is on a six game winning streak and faces North Idaho on Saturday November 20th in Coeur D’Alene.

SLCC Women’s Basketball Jumps to #3 in NJCAA Poll

SALT LAKE CITY (November 18, 2009) – Salt Lake Community College women’s basketball jumps into the NJCAA Division I national polls by grabbing the number three spot.  This marks the first time that SLCC women’s basketball has been ranked in the top three.  SLCC is coming off of two big wins against preseason #1 ranked Central Arizona (94-79) and perennial power Midland College (62-61).
 

Freshmen Haley Holmstead leads the Bruin scoring attack with 21.2 points per game; sophomore Dayna Burgess leads with 6.0 assists and Kelsey Sparkman averages 6.8 rebounds per game.  Holmstead hit her season high in points against Central Arizona when she scored 33 points missing the scoring record by one point.

No. 3 Salt Lake takes on #18 College of Southern Idaho on Thursday, November 19th in Twin Falls, Idaho.



SLCC Women’s Basketball Completes the Weekend Sweep
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (November 14, 2009) – The SLCC Women’s Basketball team complete the three game sweep by defeating the Southern Idaho All Stars 74-62.  The team is now 5-1 overall heading into SWAC play.

Amie Jensen came off the bench to lead the team with 14 points.  Haley Holmstead finished her weekend with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assist and two steals.  Dayan Burgess added in 10 points with eight rebounds. 

The Lady Bruins (5-1) take their three game winning streak on the road to face the hostile College of Southern Idaho crowd on November 19th followed by a trip up to #4 North Idaho November 21st.

SLCC Women’s Basketball Hands #1 Central Arizona a 15 point loss
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (November 13, 2009) – The Salt Lake Community College Women’s Basketball team exploded for a 94-79 win over number one ranked Central Arizona.  The Bruins held a 12 point lead at half time and continued the hot shooting in the second half sinking 74% of their shots to hold off any run by Central Arizona.  The impressive win puts Salt Lake’s record at 4-1 and the team is currently on a three game winning streak.

Five players reached double figures for Salt Lake including two players finishing with a double double.  Freshman Haley Holmstead finished with a season high 33 points one point shy of the school record 34 points.  Holmstead connected on 10 of 16 shots and went 13 of 16 from the charity stripe.  Sharp shooter Sheila Adams finished with 12 points hitting on 4-9 three pointers.  Sophomores Dayna Burgess and Kelsey Sparkman both ended the game with double double’s.  Burgess scored 16 points and dished out 10 assists.  Sparkman grabbed 11 boards to go along with 13 points.

SLCC Women's Basketball Downs #5 Midland College
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (November 12,2009) - The SLCC Women's Basketball team defeated #5 Midland College 62-61.  The win takes Salt Lakes record to 3-1 overall.

With 1:30 left in the game Salt Lake was trailing by three points when Haley Holmstead took over the game.  Holmstead scored the last four points for Salt Lake sinking a free throw to take the lead with 13 seconds left. Two big defensive stops with less than one minute left on the clock sealed the win for Salt Lake.

Holmstead finished the game with 21 points followed by Sheila Adams with 10. Jami Mokofisi came off the bench to score a tough eight points.

SLCC Women's Basketball defeats Pima by Nine
CEDAR CITY, Utah (November 7, 2009) - The SLCC Women’s Basketball team tallies another win defeating Pima College 59-50.  Haley Holmstead finished with 19 points leading the Bruin scoring attack and Kelsey Sparkman cleaned up on the boards finishing with 13 rebounds.  Point guard Dayna Burgess added six points, four steals and three assists in the win.  Salt Lake’s tough defense held Pima to 4 of 22 on three point attempts. 

Salt Lake (2-1) heads up to Twin Fall’s on November 13th for the CSI Tournament where they will face two tough opponents in Midland College and Central Arizona.

Holmstead Leads Bruins to First Win

CEDER CITY, Utah (November 6, 2009) – The SLCC Women’s Basketball (1-1) team evened their record win a ten point (73-63) win against Arizona Western.  Haley Holmstead led all Bruin scoring with 17 points and Ali Blake powered her way to score 16 along with five rebounds.  Jami Mokofisi was 5-7 from the charity stripe to finish with nine points off the bench and point guard Dayna Burgess controlled the offence eight assists and four steals.

Salt Lake (1-1) takes to the floor again tomorrow against Pima College at the SUU Tournament in Cedar City.

Women’s Basketball Falls in OT

CASPER, Wyoming (November 2, 2009) – The SLCC Women’s Basketball team opened there 2009-2010 season with a tough overtime loss to Casper College 78-81.  Freshmen Haley Holmstead led the offence with 24 points and nine rebounds.  Kelsey Sparkman added in 13 points and eight rebounds along with Dayna Burgess scoring 10 points with seven assist and seven rebounds.

The Bruins look to even their record as they return to the floor this weekend at the SUU Tournament held in Cedar City, Utah.

Salt Lake CC Hires New Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

SALT LAKE CITY (July 25, 2009) – Athletic Director Norma Carr is pleased to announce that Shelley Jarrard has been named the new assistant women’s basketball coach and academic advisor for the athletic department. 

Coach Jarrard has an extensive background that includes over 10 years of playing and coaching at the collegiate level.  Most recently from 2004-2006 she was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State University.  Prior to Kansas State Jarrard spent 10 years at the University of Utah as an assistant coach.  While with the Ute’s she helped the team advance to the NCAA Tournament seven times and had 6 All-Americans.

Coach Jarrard specializes in perimeter players and defensive strategies. 

"Shelley will bring an amazing amount of experience to SLCC women's basketball.  She's the entire coaching package with teaching, training, recruiting, and scouting experience” said Head Coach Betsy Specketer  “ along with the X's and O's of high level floor games.  I look forward to working with her and using her experience and knowledge to further the growth and development of our program."

She earned her bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt, while playing for the Commodores she finished with 1,003 points scored and was team MVP in 1992.
