ON-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES & SLCC ANNOUNCEMENTS Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center Donation Drive Currently, there is a dire need for non-perishable food items for the Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center. The food bank and many food pantries throughout the city are low on supplies. As a result, there has been a shortage of adequate, nourishing food for the center. With the temperatures getting colder, the center could also use warm clothing, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags. Last year, over 800 homeless youth and dependent children of homeless youth were served. There are donation bins distributed at several SLCC campuses: South City Campus-near East entrance, Library Square Campus -at the front desk, Meadowbrook Campus-student lounge, Taylorsville Campus-student building near the information desk. By the end of the week there should also be bins at Sandy, Jordan and Miller campuses. The donation drive will end October 9, 2009, at which time we will collect the donation bins and their contents. Your donations will go directly to the Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center. For those interested in making financial donations or donations directly, the center is located at 655 South State Street in Salt Lake or call 801-364-0744. Thank you for your support, together we can make a difference. Diversity Exploration Student Life and Leadership, and the Diversity and Multicultural Programming Committee invite you to a Diversity Exploration on Thursday, October 8 at noon in the Student Event Center on the Taylorsville Redwood campus. Refreshments will be provided. The purpose of this event is to explore, learn and share diversity in our community. Many people have misunderstood the concept and definition of diversity and relate it only to race, stereotyping, and gender differences. At this event, Doctor Abio Ayeliya, SLCC Leadership and Diversity Coordinator, will give a presentation on the concept of diversity, the demographics of diversity at Salt Lake Community College and in the broader community. This event will serve as an opportunity for students to participate and experience the concepts related to diversity that they have learned in their classrooms. Guadalupe Schools Tutoring Volunteers The VIP (Voluntary Improvement Program) utilizes volunteer tutors to teach English as a Second Language to low-income, immigrant adults. Instruction takes place in small groups (2-4 people per group). Lessons are mainly competency-based, with a focus on life-skills rather than grammar rules. The volunteer will be assigned a regular group, with whom s/he will meet one evening each week, from 7 to 9 pm.
