ON-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES & SLCC ANNOUNCEMENTS

Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center Donation Drive

Currently, there is a dire need for non-perishable food items for the Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center. The food bank and many food pantries throughout the city are low on supplies. As a result, there has been a shortage of adequate, nourishing food for the center. With the temperatures getting colder, the center could also use warm clothing, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags.  Last year, over 800 homeless youth and dependent children of homeless youth were served. There are donation bins distributed at several SLCC campuses: South City Campus-near East entrance, Library Square Campus -at the front desk, Meadowbrook Campus-student lounge, Taylorsville Campus-student building near the information desk. By the end of the week there should also be bins at Sandy, Jordan and Miller campuses. The donation drive will end October 9, 2009, at which time we will collect the donation bins and their contents. Your donations will go directly to the Salt Lake Homeless Youth Center. For those interested in making financial donations or donations directly, the center is located at 655 South State Street in Salt Lake or call 801-364-0744. Thank you for your support, together we can make a difference.

Diversity Exploration

Student Life and Leadership, and the Diversity and Multicultural Programming Committee invite you to a Diversity Exploration on Thursday, October 8 at noon in the Student Event Center on the Taylorsville Redwood campus. Refreshments will be provided. The purpose of this event is to explore, learn and share diversity in our community. Many people have misunderstood the concept and definition of diversity and relate it only to race, stereotyping, and gender differences. At this event, Doctor Abio Ayeliya, SLCC Leadership and Diversity Coordinator, will give a presentation on the concept of diversity, the demographics of diversity at Salt Lake Community College and in the broader community. This event will serve as an opportunity for students to participate and experience the concepts related to diversity that they have learned in their classrooms. For more information call (801) 957-3170. The public is welcome!

Profiles in Leadership

“Profiles in Leadership” is on October 21, 2009 at 6:00 pm in the Student Event Center. Your input on our state's needs would be very much appreciated. Just follow the link and complete the survey by clicking here. Please send inquiries to pdavidson@utah.gov or call 801-538-8785. Youth DiverseCity Writing Series

The SLCC Community Writing Center needs two service-learning students or student volunteers to work with 13-18-year-old teens at the Sorenson Center for the Youth DiverseCity Writing Series. Students do not have to be excellent writers. Instead, they are trained to work as writing group mentors two evenings a month. The Sorenson center prefers college mentors as positive role models and requires a background check. The CWC asks that volunteers agree to at least six months. For more information contact Andrea Malouf at 801-957-4992 or 801-957-4713.

Taylorsville Elementary Tutoring Volunteers

Taylorsville Elementary 6th grade classes are in great need of volunteers that would be willing to work with students in reading, writing, and math, or help out teachers in the classroom. If you are interested contact Tracy Jensen at tdjensen@graniteschools.org.

Guadalupe Schools Tutoring Volunteers

The VIP (Voluntary Improvement Program) utilizes volunteer tutors to teach English as a Second Language to low-income, immigrant adults. Instruction takes place in small groups (2-4 people per group). Lessons are mainly competency-based, with a focus on life-skills rather than grammar rules. The volunteer will be assigned a regular group, with whom s/he will meet one evening each week, from 7 to 9 pm. Upon arriving at the school, the tutor finds a lesson plan and all necessary materials prepared. The volunteer and his/her students work through the lesson plan; the professional staff is present to assist in any way needed. If you are interested or for more information please contact Kate Diggins at 801-531-6100 ext. 1107 or Mark Wolf at 801-531-6100 ext. 1105.

YouthLINC

If you are willing to serve locally, you can earn a sponsorship that pays almost half the cost of an international service trip next summer to Kenya, Mexico, Peru, or Thailand. YouthLINC is a Utah not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating life-time humanitarians through a school year program of local and international service. Applications are open to all Utah secondary and college students, and the deadline is October 10, 2009. Please visit http://www.youthlinc.org for complete information.
